5/20
I woke up WAY to early on Monday because I had a ton of work to do and 석규 (Seogkyu) wanted to meet at noon.
I worked at the bakery and waited for him to call...
And waited for him...
and waited.....
And finally at 12 he called me to tell me that he just woke up. And wouldn't be ready until around 3 pm. So I continued to work until then, going through two whole soy lattes and a green tea muffin.
명근 (Myeongeun) and I chatted idly too as we worked. He was using English more and more these days and I was very proud of him. He gave me a bag of... I don't know fried bread??? but sugary and sweet? He said it was his favorite.
It was DANG good. Like sweet crouton sticks.
Finally, FINALLY 석규 was ready and we met in 홍대 (Hongdae). I voted we go to a cafe, and I had one in particular that I had wanted to go to for sometime.
On our way we are drawn into a claw machine arcade. 석규 becoming slave to a stubborn squirtle that he finally got on the 11th try. I got a sushi on the second.
My phone was nearly dead, so I had to rely on Succ's navigating abilities. I followed him from 홍대 to the far end of 합정 (Hapjeong), nearly to the 한강 (Han Gang | Han River) crossing. And then he realized we needed to cross the road. And the cross walk was way behind us. So we turn around and cross, then make our way in the direction of the river again. He checks the map, stopping suddenly. I give him the stink eye.
"We have to go to the other side. Don't we."
He doesn't answer.
I snatch the phone from him and see that not only had we crossed the highway for NO reason, but the cafe was actually back in the direction of 홍대.
I inform him that he has lost possession of the map.
Cook and Book is a vegan cafe nestled into the quiet streets of 합정 (Hapjeong) next to a gated school ground. Its small, situated in the basement of a cottage sized building. With patio seating, soft creaking floor boards and a light atmosphere, it resembled an old farm home. The cooler was lined with delicious looking cakes and pastries, while the menu was full of vegan dishes that consisted of full-bodied flavors. I was most excited about the drink list.
UNFORTUNATELY they were out of pistachio milk, so I had to settle for soy, and I got a berry smoothie topped high over the rim of my glass.
Succ Succ Boi just got a boring Americano.
We rested in the cafe for awhile until we decided to go back towards my home where we would drop his bag off before spending all night running around Seoul, since he'd be taking the first flight back to 대구 in the morning.
On our way we make a pit stop for 타코야키 (Takoyaki) in 홍대. We got the curry flavor and shared a box of eight for only 3,500 원.
We ate as we walked, arriving at my home and dumping our stuff off. Then make our way to 명동역 (Myeongdong Yeok | Myeongdong) that was nearest the famous 남대문시장 (Namdaemoon Sijang | Namdaemoon Market) where we needed to transfer to a bus that would take us to our final goal, 남산 (Namsan) tower. Although Succ swore he knew where to go... suddenly he didn't. A small 할머니 passes us, decked out in hiking gear and a plastic visor, looking like she was ready to GO. She informed us that we could walk to upwards towards a bus stop, but there was no nearby bus stop that would serviced 남산. We walked one street up and found the bus we needed. Guess it was her first time hiking the area.... so the bus took us around the city and back towards the mountain. Up, up, up the road twisted and turned toward the highest outlook in the center of Seoul. We toured the area, taking pictures in front of the beautiful city sky line. We had gotten lucky, as the moon was just coming over the horizon of the mountains, like a blazing comet, it glowed a burning crimson, hulking over the sky. We walked to the top of the outlook spot, where locks with names were attached to the gates as far as the eye could see. Jammed into each crook and crevice, these were locked in hopes of an ever lasting relationship. So naturally Succ tried to unlock them.
We had to ask four different people to take our picture, as the first was shaky and you couldn't see the skyline, the second the guy went filter crazy, the third stood way too far away, and then finally we had a winner.
We catch a bus back to the station, stopping at a 곌란빵 stand to fulfill our empty bellies.
and take line 4 to Seoul station, transferring to the airport railroad to 공덕역 (Gongdeok yeok | Gongdeok Station), line 5.
We arrive a two stations later at 여의도 Park, located just beside 한강 and a hot spot for the traditional 치맥 (chimaek | chicken and beer) picnic.
We bought a mat, beer, soju, and order our chicken. But it was absolutely freezing. And Succ Succ Boi only had a tshirt with him. So I run back to the convenient store and buy a blanket for him. God I'm nice.
We end up sharing life stories as we drink and wait for our chicken. When it finally arrives, both of us had gotten to know understand each other quite a bit more. Hungry as heck, we munch on 양념 (yangnyeom) and 간장 (ganjang) fried chicken.
Too cold to stand it anymore, we take a taxi back to my home and hang out until the subways open, making really stupid videos and pissing off my never quiet neighbors. 5 am hits, and 석규 takes off.
My head hits the pillow. Hard.
Thank you 석규! I had such a great time!
